In 1962, thirty of them came to a piece of land the Gedikpaşa Surp Hovhannes Church had purchased near Tuzla, on Istanbul's Asian shore, and they laid the foundations themselves — mixing concrete, hauling timber, shaping the place that would become their summer refuge. One of those children was Hrant Dink, who would grow up to become Turkey's most prominent Armenian-Turkish journalist, and who was assassinated in Istanbul in January 2007. That a man of such importance to Turkish civil society spent his childhood summers at this camp is not a footnote to Camp Armen's story. It is the heartbeat of it.
